My Not-So-Definitive Guide to a Joyful Summer (pun intended)

Weโ€™re in the early days of summer, friends! The air has been heavy this week with warm rainstorms and thunder in the distance (to Graham’s dismay), and Iโ€™m fresh off a successful Pool Dad Memorial Day weekend. Vibes are on the up!ย  I’ve decided to ease into the season relaxed, with Diet Cokes stocked in the coldest shelf in the fridge and chilled washcloths on another.ย  Luxury in the small things, you know?

This isnโ€™t a bucket list. Thereโ€™s no pressure to โ€œmake the mostโ€ of anything. Itโ€™s just a not-so-definitive guide to a great summer season: a collection of little pleasures, small rituals, and nostalgic nods that make this season feel sweet as cherry pie. (And yes, there will be lil pies.)

  1. The Only Shorts Worth Wearing Have An Elastic Waist
The era of squeezing myself into stiff , ripped denim for the sake of summerย is behind me now. I’m living in the golden age of comfort, and the shorts Iโ€™m wearing on repeat have both an elastic waistband and a button closure, because I like options and room the eight pounds of cherries I’m going to eat. I found them at Gap Factory, in a deep wash denim that makes me feel pulled-together but not trying too hard (because Iโ€™m not). The pockets are deep enough for my phone and a handful of rocks I might feel emotionally compelled to bring home from a walk. I also got them in white and lavender because when somethingโ€™s good, you buy it in multiples. Thatโ€™s math, mathing. (Gap Factory)

  2. The Perfect Cocktail Hour Snack
This summer, my fridge has a new non-negotiable: a big olโ€™ container of Texas Caviar Salad , nestled right next to the half watermelon. Iโ€™d argue itโ€™s one of the original dense bean salads, packed with enough fiber and feeling to carry you from โ€œjust one bite before dinnerโ€ to โ€œthis is dinner nowโ€ without a hint of shame. For when a weekend cocktail hour drifts into a sunset which, frankly, is the goal. Serve with limey tortilla chips or a sturdy salt and vinegar chip. Add a cold glass of rosรฉ a single ice cube and – perfection. (Simply Recipes)

  3. A Hat That Makes You Feel Like Diane Keaton
Itโ€™s got a sturdy brim and a no-nonsense energyโ€”equal parts โ€œHamptons in Augustโ€ and โ€œBellville before 9am.โ€ It’s the Monterey Straw Rancher Hat and yes, the sweat around the rim just gives it character.(Hemlock)

  4. Three Things Youโ€™re Allowed to Cancel for No Reason
A Friday meeting. Plans that require a bra. Any event described as “networking”. Networking is only allowed in sweater weather.
  5. My Slightly Over-the-Top Pool/Beach Bag Packing List

Letโ€™s start with the unsung hero: a Trader Joeโ€™s insulated tote. Itโ€™s chic in an ironic way and, with a few ice packs tossed in the bottom, it turns your pool bag into a portable summer survival kit. I think a pool bag should be equal parts functional and luxurious. Inside mine youโ€™ll find:

    • A damp, frozen washcloth with a few drops of eucalyptus oil (packed in a ziplock and guaranteed to resurrect your soul to wipe off sweat or sticky sunscreen).

    • A thrifted paperback I wonโ€™t cry over if it falls in the water.

    • An affordable SPF 50 bronzing spray that makes me feel vaguely like a Bond girl.

    • Talc-free baby powder for post-beach sandy feet because prolonged sandy feet gives me the chills.

    • And an emotional support Yetiโ€”filled with something hydrating, like iced hibiscus tea with a splash of agave, coconut water, and coconut cream.

  6. One Thing to Grill That Will Raise Eyebrows (in a good way)ย
Consider dessert on the grill. Think: thick slices of pound cake (store-bought or homemade, no oneโ€™s asking) brushed with melted butter and toasted on the grill until golden and just a little smoky. Top with macerated sliced strawberries, a dollop of whipped cream, and a pinch of flaky salt if youโ€™re feeling fancy.ย  See: Grilled Strawberry Shortcake (Joy the Baker)

  7. Fridge Essential: Very Crisp Diet Cokeย
Extra ice. Add True Lime and a glass straw.
  8. Rewatch: Moonrise Kingdom
For a summer night when itโ€™s too hot to think and the only plan is couch, kettle corn, and air conditioning. Moonrise Kingdom is my favorite dreamy little escape featuring young love, khaki scout badges, and the most whispy, old Polaroid color palette. (Amazon Prime, Joy the Baker)

  9. The Smell of Summer
If I don’t smell like a cherry pie this summer, I’m not doing it right. (Allure)

  10. A Baking Project for the Hottest Day of the Year
Coming soon to the blog: Banana Malt Icebox Cake. It sets in the fridge (next to the Diet Coke and Texas Caviar).

  11. One Good Deed That Costs You Nothing
Ok but what if this is the summer we befriend all the dogs in town? I’m going to carry a few dog treats in your pocket because once you get a dog on your side, the dog owner is soon to follow.ย  One of Will’s neighbors gives our dogs treats and we have one dog that escapes the backyard to go look for this man soย  – I know it’s a powerful force.

Thatโ€™s the vibe this summer: low-stakes delight, elastic waistbands, and cold Diet Cokes. Weโ€™re not doing it allโ€”weโ€™re just doing what feels good. Wishing you long golden hours and deep tans.

xo Joy

  1. Always love your summer bucket lists, but appreciate this “chill” version as well (especially during this phase of life). I also feel seen re: elastic waistbands! I need more of those, plus flowy summer dresses this season.

  2. Oh Joy! You paint such a picture that I could see myself living it! I donโ€™t know why not, either! Some forethought, thanks to JTB, homemade lemonade filling the fridge doors, delicious Portuguese bread filled with chicken mayo, ice coffee, lime sorbets, umbrellas or shaded seating under the fig tree, rose-hint rosรฉ or pink champagne, falling asleep by the pool, a quick shower and off to the beach for a cocktail and grilled fishโ€ฆโ€ฆsounds like a perfect day!
Reality may be different, with the hungry hordes clamouring for me to cook my specialties de casa that they love, dashing the dream of relaxing with a book all afternoon.
One can hope! Thank you, Joy.

  3. Joy, I adore your writing. You slay the cool, meaningful vibe with memorable phrases and tactile thoughts. I always look forward to your posts. Thanks for making us all feel seen and cared for. Cheers to a summer of effortless nonchalance with a mini Yeti of blood orange iced tea on repeat.

  4. I am completely ready for Banana Malt Icebox Cake.

Liked the shorts too, esp. the railroad stripe version.

  5. What a great post to kick off Summer! It makes me start the season with a big smile! I can smell the sunscreen, taste the cherries and the Diet Coke! Iโ€™m in! Dogs are the best! Have a wonderful, joyful summer! :)

  6. Could you leave a recipe for that hibiscus tea? I like it but it’s always a bit too sharp. Coconut sounds like the perfect fix! I’ll also mix cold brew hibiscus tea with sparkling water.

  7. Loved todayโ€™s column, though summer is my least favorite season (hundred degree days are the norm here). Will definitely make the Texas caviarโ€ฆmy kind of dish. However, having had nine skin biopsies with five of them turning out to be basal cell carcinoma, I would forego the deep tan.
